Voyage dans la lune, Le 1902

A Trip to the Moon begins with a group of scientists in the Astronomic Club trying to devise ways to send people to the moon. The president of the society, Professor Barbenfouillis, is actually director George Méliès. The group of scientists quickly develops a bullet-like spacecraft that they intend to fire into the moon. Five other astronauts accompany Barbenfouillis on his voyage, which includes meeting extraterrestrials named the Selenites, seeing strange mushroom growths on the moon, and observing the Earth, all in just a trip to the moon. A Trip to the Moon, or in its native language, Voyage Dans la Lune, is a twelve-minute science fiction film from French director George Méliès, who became a pioneer of early cinema with his innovative special effects techniques. Méliès, born in 1861, was actually a magician, credited as the father of all special effects in cinema. Because of the engineering developments that led to early cinema in the 1890s, all of the pioneer filmmakers were engineers and inventors, not artists or entertainers. Thomas Edison, the Lumière brothers (Auguste and Louis), and many of the other pioneers all had backgrounds in invention and engineering. Méliès was one of the first true artists of cinema, having performed magic tricks and shown lantern slides in his Paris theater since 1888. In 1895, Méliès began making films with the Lumière brothers, often filming just everyday scenes and short comedy skits, but he also used a few editing techniques, such as starting and stopping the camera, to form primitive special effects shots. Méliès even often receives credit as the founder of the horror, science fiction, and dark comedy genres. Most film historians consider A Trip to the Moon the first science fiction movie ever made.
