Doctor Mabuse 1922

Fritz Lang directed Dr Mabuse in 1922 in cooperation with his later (ex) wife Thelma von Harbou. She later collaborated with the Nazi's, while Lang had to flee to the USA refusing to collaborate with the regime. Mabuse is the early German counterpart of evildoers like Dracula, Professor Moriarty or even Blofeld. The Mabuse sequels, of which this is the first, span from 1922 to 1969, the longest period in cinematic history. Lang had to work under bad conditions due to the devastation of resources during the first World War in Germany. The almost documentary realism for which Lang is famous reflects the everyday conditions of post war Germany, handing the audience an way to escape and absorbe their scattered lives. In the final shoot out between Mabuse (played by Rudolf Klein-Rogge) and the police, Lang uses real bullets to enhance the realistic content. Dr Mabuse, Der Spieler shows how rewarding crime is in a country where people need to survive and have a craving for leadership and directives. Within a decade of this movie the real life Dr Mabuse would rise, making Lang leave his native country.
