Faust 1926

F.W Murnau is one of the great German expressionist directors. The crown jewel of his oeuvre is without a doubt Faust, the last film he directed before he started working in the USA. Previously he directed his most famous production Nosferatu, the classic cult horror filled with unholy nightmare like intend. In Faust the devil descents from heaven in one of the most famous sequences in film history. The camerawork by Carl Hoffman, the use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) were unprecedented. Every sequence seems to enlighten another archetypical symbol. The angel in white with wings, the devil in black with horns on his repulsive head, the young virgin, Faust with his halo like hair and beard, the horrible death by stake and the burning flames are just some of the acrhetypes depicted in the epic drama featruing the devil himself. TThe full reconstruction of the film by Luciano Berriata of the Filmoteca Espanola was made using footage from several available prints. 175 new intertitles were created for the Kino VHS version, subtitles were also added to translate the many German language books and manuscripts shown throughout the film. The sound was digitally remastered, accompanied by a full orchestral score composed and conducted by Timothy Brock, performed by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra.
