Alibi 1929
A provocative and successful attempt by Roland West to direct an expressionistic film. In fact Alibi is often referred to as the first expressionist noir from the States. The story is about a criminal who is recently released from prison joining his former crew again. Soon after he is suspected of killing a cop. The vicious prohibition gangster fixes an alibi by setting up a policeman's daughter. Alibi was Roland West's first sound picture, leaning heavily on Hitchcock's style of phrase accentuation to enhance suspense and live dialogue dubbing. The film received Oscar nominations for best picture and best actor (Chester Morris ) in 1929. His directing shows odd angles, claustrofobic spaces and uneasy camera motion, all to enhance the thrill of suspense. In Europe the film as released as "The Perfect Alibi".
