Charade 1963

Charade is often compared to a Hitchcock like movie with an Agatha Christie plot. Allthough the film is elegant with major stars Audrey hepburn and Cary Grant, it never reaches the suspense peaks Hitchcock is so famous for. Meaby it is the typical British humor at the bottom of their conversations which counteracts the suspense factor. Director Stanley Donen admittedly wanted to direct a movie in the style of the master of suspense. He already directed the main stars in earlier productions but together this was a first. Grant had turned down several roles opposing Hepburn because of the 25 years in age difference. He initially said no again, forcing Columbia Pictures to screen Paul Newman, but his rates were too high. Reggie Lambert (Audrey Hepburn) is about to divorce her husband when she finds that he has been murdered after converting every penny they owned to cash, which is also missing. She then starts to be pursued by several men, including a handsome stranger, Peter Joshua (Cary Grant), who want the fortune her murdered husband stole during World War II. Naturally, everyone thinks that Reggie knows the whereabouts of the money. As the corpses begin to accumulate, it becomes increasingly important - and difficult - for Reggie to determine who are the good guys and who are the villains. Who can she trust? After Grant agreed to participate the movie made it to the box office top ten of 1963. The title song was nominated for an oscar, but lost, Hepburn won the prestigeous British Award for her performance. Ironically 1963 was also the year of the now cult film "The Birds". Charade both financially and critically was much more succesfull.
