Phantom of the Opera 1925
Lon Chaney's Phantom is both one of the great tragic figures of the silent cinema, and one of the greatest villains (standing next to Nosferatu himself). On the sets those who have seen the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will be familiar with since he took almost every idea from this film, Christine and Raoul fall in love under the jealous gaze of the Phantom, a musical genius trapped in the bowels of the Opera House who would kill everyone to keep Christine Daae for himself. Chaney's make-up is excellent, an almost skeletal face under the mask which conveys anger, sadness, and love. A powerful film which hasn't been eclipsed by later sound versions.
