Beyond Bengal 1927

Beyond Bengal is Harry Schenck's shocking contribution to mankind. An elephant expedition travels with 14 camera's and British scientist Joan Baldwin, through the Malayan jungle, filming the natives performing their daily activities. The film was independently produced and financed by the Sultan of Perak, who makes an appearance. Starting out with the introduction of the main characters this documentary evolves in a stomach twister. Animals kill animals, men kill animals and animals eat men 10 feet in front of the camera (is the crocodile scene for real?). During the release it was rumoured several sequences were staged for an even more dramatic shock effect. The natives are shown as would-be whites, including a native wedding where the groom wears a tie and a hat. In this day and age this documentary is a strange surreal diary of everyday life in the Malayan jungle as perceived by white hunter, director and thrillseeker Schenck.
