Birth of a Nation 1915

The first highly controversial (explicitly racial) full feature produced. Only a few films ever received more critique and admiration at the same time. D.W. griffith depicts the faith of two interwoven families during the American Civil War accentuating the North South opposition. With a major cast, revolutionary sets and camera handling "Birth of a Nation" is a masterpiece to the full extend of the word. Considered by many standards THE landmark picture in American film history. The outdoor scenery, the epic battlegrounds and the use of creative camera lenses are just a few of many innovations Griffith introduced to the world of cinema. Interference by the NAACP two scenes were cut from the original score. Counteracting the accusations of being a racist, Griffith directed "Intolerance", immediately following "The Birth of a Nation". Almost a century after its release the controversy continues. The film is said to be used by todays KKK as a propgandistic and recruitment tool. The registration at the National Library of Congress in 1992 also met with social resistance.
