Paris qui Dort aka Crazy Ray, The 1923
A mad Parisian scientist's "crazy ray" has frozen everything in place. A few survivors, out of range at the top of the Eiffel tower, suddenly find that they have the run of the city. This French, silent is the true first SF ever, the original title is Paris qui Dort. Clair created the surreal tones of this film through the alternation of different film speeds, directions and shots. In Crazy Ray, he uses these techniques to experiment with concept of time and a film maker's ability to manipulate time and to stop time all together.
